Rejecting Xenophobia, Misinformation and Violence
The South African Hate Crimes Working Group (HCWG) condemns in the strongest terms the violence and unrest that unfolded in Ku Gompo (formerly East London)
We are deeply concerned by the rise in xenophobic rhetoric, scapegoating, and the spread of misinformation that so often accompanies moments like this. Blaming foreign nationals or “the other” for South Africa’s complex socio-economic challenges is not only false—it is dangerous. It diverts attention from the real, systemic issues that require urgent and accountable leadership.
We have seen this pattern before: inflammatory language, unchecked misinformation, and hate speech that creates fertile ground for violence. What follows is predictable—and preventable.
Let us be clear:
- Hate speech has consequences.
- Misinformation fuels fear and division.
- And violence is never the answer.
While communities have legitimate grievances that must be heard and addressed, targeting individuals or groups based on nationality or identity is a violation of human rights and the rule of law.
HCWG calls for:
- An immediate end to violence and incitement;
- Active rejection of xenophobia and all forms of scapegoating;
- Responsible leadership in both public discourse and policing;
- Urgent action to counter misinformation and protect those at risk;
- Accountability for those who incite or perpetrate violence.
South Africa’s challenges are real—but they will not be solved through division or harm. They require honesty, leadership, and a commitment to justice for all who live in this country.
HCWG stands in solidarity with all affected communities and will continue to take a stand and speak out against to any hate-related incidents in our beloved country.
